Local pastor told me we don’t need gun control because Jesus will come back and “fix all this.” This mentality that we don’t need to take action in regard to the problems we face (climate change, gun violence) “cuz Jesus is coming back” is not only dangerous, it’s straight up fucking insane.

They seriously think we shouldn’t do anything to better society because Jesus will come back and fix it all. That’s a bullshit excuse to sit with your thumbs up your ass and do nothing while waiting for magic fairy tale baby Jesus to come save the fucking day. I’ve said it before... people need to get off their Goddamn knees and take action... not sit around waiting for a two thousand year old dead man to come fix all your fucking problems. submitted by /u/relevantlife to r/atheism [comments] Source link
LDS (a relatively small religion) is worth over $40B and collects over $5B tithes annually (links inside). Isn’t it high time we stopped any tax exemptions to this insanely rich anti-humanity nonsense?

From Bloomberg, original behind paywall. https://archive.org/details/HowTheMormonsMakeMoney According to U.S. law, religions have no obligation to open their books to the public, and the LDS Church officially stopped reporting any finances in the early 1960s. In 1997 an investigation by Time used cross-religious comparisons and internal information to estimate the church’s total value at $30 billion. The magazine also produced an estimate that $5 billion worth of tithing flows into the church annually, and that it owned at least $6 billion in stocks and bonds. The Mormon Church at the time said the estimates were grossly exaggerated, but a recent investigation by Reuters in collaboration with sociology professor Cragun estimates that the LDS Church is likely worth $40 billion today and
Conservative Christians argue public schools are being used to indoctrinate the youth with secular and liberal thought. Growing up in the American south, I found the opposite to be true. Creationism was taught as a competing theory to the Big Bang, evolution was skipped and religion was rampant.

6th grade science class. Instead of learning about scientific theories regarding how the universe began, we got a very watered down version of “the Big Bang” and then our teacher presented us with what she claimed was a “competing scientific theory” in regard to how we all came about. We were instructed to close our eyes and put our heads down on our desks. Then our teacher played this ominous audio recording about how “in the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth ~5,000 years ago.” Yep, young earth bullshit was presented as a competing scientific theory. No shit. 10th grade biology... a little better, but our teacher entirely skipped the evolution chapter to avoid controversy. And Jesus. Oh, boy, Jesus was everywhere. There was prayer before every sporting event. Local
